EMERGENCY LIGHTING
When the mains lighting fails in an occupied building, legislation normally requires that secondary (emergency) lighting is immediately provided to limit panic, ensure safe evacuation of the building by highlighting the escape routes, or the way to an escape route.
All safety and fire fighting equipment should also be covered.
The requirement for emergency lighting will be highlighted, at least, following your Fire Risk Assessment under the Regulatory Reform
(Fire Safety) Order 2005 during which, your assessor/competent person will identify control measures for reducing risks down to an acceptable level.
When designing an emergency lighting system BS5266, Part 1 and 7:1999 should be followed. Procyon Fire & Security Ltd have the specialist knowledge to design, install and maintain your systems.
There are various types of emergency lighting available. Most commonly self contained luminaires are installed which means that in the event of a mains failure the lighting will operate from its battery. Slave luminaires and conversions are also available, there are also maintained and non maintained fittings.
You should also consider your emergency lighting system (and your fire detection) when making alterations to a premises as works may be required. We specialise in the Emergilite IR2 system which allows automatic or manual testing, and luminaires that can be downloaded to a hand programmer and monitored with a PC database. These units are very competitively priced and considerable more reliable than some of the 'addressable' lighting systems. They will directly replace existing self contained units, and do not require test switches.
Emergency lighting systems must be tested in order to meet your obligations under BS5266, Part 1. Daily and monthly tests usually fall under the responsibility of the building occupier, and then biannual and annual testing can be carried out by Procyon Fire & Security Ltd. Your tests must be recorded in your Fire Safety Log Book which
we can supply. Please contact us to arrange a visit from a consultant to discuss your requirements |
